Summer Camp 2009 - DeSoto Area Council
June 7-July 3, 2009
This year summer camp was something new for all of us, some of us more than others. We had three weeks of camp, some of us had five some of us had two, but the good thing was that all the Scouts that were on staff were also members of the Order of the Arrow. We had a week where the perennially wonderful staff comes out early, sets up camp and plans out the weeks of camp, so that the campers will enjoy their time at Camp Desoto.
The first week of summer camp was the LDSY (Latter Day Saints Youth) week. We had 198 scouts and 52 adults. During this time, Camp Desoto was full of energetic, enthusiastic Scouts. The Scouts took many different merit badge classes including cooking, environmental science, Brown Sea Island (aka First Year Camper), and fishing and wildlife management, just to name a few. While the LDS scouts were at camp, they had daily service projects. They made a hiking trail from second levee to Lost Lake and made a stunning marble barbeque pit behind the dining hall. Their projects are greatly appreciated by the scouts and staff at summer camp. As a member of the kitchen staff for camp I can truly say that with the kitchen we have we did the best we could do. Since we’ve got major skills we can take on just about anything. Overall it was a great week and the LDS scouts really enjoyed themselves.
The second week was our regular Boy Scout week. That week was packed with non-stop activity. We had a lot of activities ranging from free swims, free canoe and kayak, water carnival, which had a lot of water activities, knot-tying competitions, and last but not least staff hunt. We had a great crowd at camp! There was a campfire were each troop prepared a skit. There were a lot of interesting ones that had the staff dying in laughter. Troop 42 made an example out of me when they used me as the victim of their skit. Touché Troop 42.This summer was a blast and I look forward to seeing everyone next June at Camp Desoto!
Exemplifying chiefly glory,
